Fall is here, the kids are back in school, and it is the perfect time for some fall family fun. This season is packed with events and treats your family will love. There are festivities for those who want to travel out and those who would prefer to stay in. We collected a list of 10 activities that will not only be enjoyable for you and your kids but also make this a memorable fall together. Let’s get started!
1. Bake a Fall Treat
What is a more classic fall activity than baking the perfect, warm, cozy treat! Whether you are making some pumpkin bread, cookies, or pie, there is something delicious for everyone. This is a great way to help your kids learn how to bake and safely use a kitchen. If you are not sure what to bake, get a recipe from grandma, your friends, or work together with your kids to help find a great recipe on Pinterest. It will be a lovely time for you to share a sweet treat and sweet moments with your kids.
2. Visit Farm Animals
It’s so fun to see new animals as a kid. Do you live close to a zoo or farm? Take advantage of the opportunity and go visit some cute farm animals. Your kids can learn about the animals they are visiting and even feed and pet a few. Pigs, horses, cows, oh my! If your kids love animals, this could be your perfect fall activity. Also, do not forget about ZooLights later in the season for another family-friendly animal event.
3. Carve Pumpkins
Fall and pumpkins have almost become synonymous terms—you cannot have one without the other. One of the most festive family activities is pumpkin carving. Travel on down to your local pumpkin patch with your family to search for the perfect round orange squash. After purchasing your favorite pick, take it home and carve it with your kids. If you don’t enjoy carving or have the tools, painting pumpkins can also be a cute and creative alternative. Your family pumpkins will make cute fall decorations on your porch and be a wonderful family bonding activity.
4. Find Your way through a Maze
Every fall, local corn mazes and straw mazes pop up. This activity will test your memory and navigation skills as your family works together to find the way out. You will have lots of laughs navigating the walls of endless corn with your kids. If your family struggles to find the way out, there are often extra exits to leave early or employees who can direct you to the correct route. Some mazes may have times when they are considered “haunted” and have actors roaming around in costume. Be sure to check the times for the maze you plan to attend if this won’t be enjoyable for your kids.
5. Hot Chocolate and A Movie Night
If you are looking for a night in with your family, this may be the activity for you. Make some delicious hot cocoa and pop in your favorite family movie. This can be a relaxing and cozy indoor activity on cold days. To make the night even more unforgettable, collect quilts, cushions, and pillows from around the house to make a blanket fort with your kids. Adding this silly element will be memorable and, built well, more comfortable than your couch. Your kids will have so much fun enjoying a movie and treat in a comfy fortress.
6. Attend a Fall Fair
Fall fairs are a great way to spend the day with your family. Face painting, games, farm animals, mazes, and more. A fall fair is not short on activities for you and your family to try. Get your face painted with your kids and compete in some games together, and do not forget to grab a yummy fall treat. You and your kids will have a blast making memories and seeing what your community has to offer. Check out what fairs and activities are coming up in your area and community. You won’t want to miss it!
7. Camp in the Backyard
Camping in the fall with your family is a staple activity, but not everyone has time to take a trip. Don’t worry! You and your kids can still have a memorable camping experience right at home in your own backyard. Make sure to bring some great family snacks and treats along to roast on an outdoor firepit. If you do not have a firepit, you can still make yummy camping treats like smores by roasting marshmallows over the oven. This will truly be a memorable campout.
There is a special feeling in giving back. Plan a volunteer activity with your kids, whether it’s through a volunteer website, a local church or hospital, or just helping the next-door neighbor. A child learning they can make a difference in someone’s life, and doing that with their parents, can be a special experience. You can even have your kids invite their friends to come along or invite extended family to join you and make it even more exciting. There are plenty of service activities that come up in the fall. Make sure to check with your community, local schools, or churches to see what opportunities are coming up.
9. Go for a Hike
Now that the weather is a bit cooler, it is an excellent time for a family hike. You can use this as an opportunity for you and your kids to get to know your local area even better and visit new spots you have not been to before. Not only is it a great time to experience nature and exercise, but also to talk with your family free of the distractionsyou might have around the house. This can be a tremendous screen-free activity for the whole family.
10. Read a Book in a Cozy Reading Nook
Reading in a cozy area of your home can be enjoyable, not just for you, but for your kids too. Dedicate a special spot in your home to reading. It might be an entire room or just a comfy corner. No matter where your nook is, make it ready to curl up in and distraction-free. You can add blankets, comfortable chairs, pillows, a bookshelf, and other furniture elements that invite your kids to sit and read a while. This can be an excellent area for your kids to catch up on their homework for school in a way that doesn’t feel like work. If you need some great ideas for books to put in your nook, check out Lawley Publishing’s book section. We have an incredible array of children’s books and release new books often.
We hope you enjoy this fall with your family. Have fun, get to know one another, and make lasting memories. It is fulfilling to be able to grow close as a family and appreciate our incredible communities. Fall can be a busy season for work and school, but it is important to take advantage of this time we have and spend it together.
